Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes stubborn fatty deposits from problem areas. Those who are physically fit may seek liposuction to define areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss. Dr. Novia will assist you in selecting the most effective body contouring procedure for enhancing your natural shape and eliminating unwanted fat.
Is Liposuction for You
The best liposuction results are seen in those individuals who have good skin tone, are in good physical shape and maintain diet and exercise programs. Candidates for liposuction have pockets of fat in one or more areas that have not been corrected with exercise. Common areas that accumulate fat include:
▪ Thighs
▪ Hips
▪ Knees
▪ Neck
▪ Abdomen
Precautions
Liposuction removes fatty deposits from the treated area. Liposuction will not correct contouring issues that are not related to fatty deposits. Irregular shape caused by weakened muscles, hernia or bone structure may require a different surgical procedure to correct.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure which can be done under general anesthesia (completely asleep), local anesthesia (completely awake) or “twilight” sedation anesthesia. The procedure requires that incisions of ½ inch be made in an inconspicuous area before inserting a long hollow needle or cannula. Once inserted beneath the skin, the cannula is used to loosen fat deposits that are then suctioned out using a vacuum.
Recovery
Swelling and bruising are to be expected with a liposuction procedure and may continue for several weeks. Compressive garments are required after surgery to reinforce the treated areas and to help control swelling. You will notice the effect of your liposuction immediately, as swelling subsides your new shape will be more evident.
You can expect to return to work for light duty in as little as three days to five days; for those with more physical jobs, your return to work should be planned at one or two weeks following surgery. You should be able to move freely the day following liposuction and resume exercise in two to four weeks.
